Torrey Pines Democratic Club

Newsletter May 2025

Dear Club Members and Friends,

We apologize for our previous error in the program details for our next club meeting on Thursday, May 22nd. Our program this month will NOT feature State Senator Catherine Blakespear as we previously stated, and she will instead be speaking to us our at our JUNE Club meeting. This was OUR error and not Senator Blakespear’s. However, we are fortunate to be welcoming another very special guest for our May program, featuring Misty O’Healy, one of the leaders of the local grassroots group Indivisible49. Indivisible49 has a strong legacy of activism, including leading over one year of hosting the largest and most sustained weekly congressional office protests in the nation. Ultimately, Rep. Darrel Issa chose not to seek re-election in California’s 49th congressional district. Misty will present an overview of Indivisible49’s continued efforts and share insights on how clubs like ours can contribute to grassroots resistance to draconian measures from the Trump administration.

We had a great meeting last month and we would like to thank Jane Lea Smith, San Dieguito Union High School District Vice President and Trustee for our Area 3, for providing updates on the district, including new initiatives as well as the possible effects of directives and funding restrictions imposed by the federal government. You can view a copy of her presentation HERE. We are very proud of our local schools and are grateful for the school boards that support them.

TPDC President Dwight Worden will also provide an update on the letters he is sending to Rep. Mike Levin and Rep. Scott Peters summarizing the concerns of our members, voiced at our previous meetings, regarding the local impacts of directives and funding cuts imposed by the current presidential administration. You can review a summary from our prior meeting discussions HERE.
