Dear Club Members and Friends,
Please join us for our Club meeting on Thursday, June 26th, starting at 6:00pm (via Zoom). Our program this month will feature State Senator Catherine Blakespear who will provide updates on recent bills that she has introduced, state budget concerns, the potential impact of changes imposed by the federal government, recent ICE operations, and other topics of interest. Her presentation will be followed by Q&A.
We had a great meeting last month and we would like to thank our guest speaker Misty O’Healy, one of the leaders of the local grassroots group Indivisible49. Misty presented an overview of Indivisible49’s continued efforts to organize grassroots resistance to draconian measures from the Trump administration. On the national level, Indivisible has been helping to organize over 1800 “No Kings” protest rallies across the country this Saturday on June 14th — the same day as President Trump’s $45 million “dictator-style military parade” (as our Senator Adam Schiff has described it). Locally, we are expecting thousands of people to be attending the San Diego No Kings Rally and March, organized by Indivisible49 and other local activist groups. The rally downtown will begin at 10am at Waterfront Park. At our neighborhood level, all are welcome to participate in the weekly protest rally held every Saturday at 11am-12pm at the corners of Camino Del Mar and 11th street. In the words of Bruce Springsteen, “The last check on power after the checks and balances of government have failed are the people, you and me. It’s in the union of people around a common set of values now that’s all that stands between a democracy and authoritarianism.”
