Dear Club Members and Friends,
Please join us for our Club meeting on Thursday, April 24th, starting at 6:00pm (via Zoom). Our program this month will feature Jane Lea Smith, San Dieguito Union High School District Vice President and Trustee for our Area 3. Jane will provide updates on the district, including new initiatives as well as the possible effects of directives and funding restrictions imposed by the federal government.
Our program will also include follow-up of our discussions from our March meeting, addressing additional concerns regarding the local impacts of federal government directives and funding cuts. We welcome all members to participate. You can review a summary from our March meeting discussions HERE. The potential impacts are becoming more evident, affecting social justice, economic inequality, and environmental stewardship. For example, UCSD is expecting up to $500M in annual funding cuts impacting critical health and environmental research as well as campus infrastructure and jobs. These cuts could also include up to $100M in lost Medicaid reimbursements for UCSD Health. UCSD has also reported the cancelling of dozens more student visas. City and County leaders, local businesses, and institutions are struggling with budget planning, not yet knowing the expected impact of forthcoming funding cuts and tariff fallout. However, local resistance to draconian measures is strong and growing. County Board of Supervisors acting chair Terra Lawson-Remer has proposed a series of new initiatives to fund shortfalls from federal cuts. At the state level, California has filed a lawsuit challenging the legality of broad-sweeping tariffs. And at the grassroots level, thousands of local residents have attended protest rallies and engaged in other pursuits for progressive justice. As a result of our discussions during our meeting, we will formally share summaries of our concerns with our elected officials and our local Democratic party. Rep. Mike Levin has specifically asked our club president Dwight Worden for our written concerns, and we will also be submitting them to Rep. Scott Peters.

Dear Club Members and Friends,
Thank you to all our members who attended our March Club meeting. Thanks also to TPDC President Dwight Worden who moderated our discussions on local concerns and how we can best focus on our grassroots efforts in pursuing progressive justice. You can read Dwight’s summary of our discussions HERE.

Donald Trump and Elon Musk think this country belongs to them. We are fighting back!
They’re taking everything they can get their hands on—our health care, our data, our jobs, our services—and daring the world to stop them. This is a crisis, and the time to act is now.
On Saturday, April 5th, we’re taking to the streets to fight back with a clear message: Hands off!
Where and when:
San Diego: San Diego Civic Center Plaza, 12:00pm to 3:00pm
OR
Encinitas: Encinitas Blvd and El Camino Real, all four corners, 11:00am to 12:30pm
This mass mobilization day is our message to the world that we do not consent to the destruction of our government and our economy for the benefit of Trump and his billionaire allies. Alongside Americans across the country, we are marching, rallying, and protesting to demand a stop the chaos and build an opposition movement against the looting of our country.
A core principle behind all Hands Off! events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.
